Why Plan Off-Season Travel?

For many (many) years, my husband traveled with students. Our kids learned at an early age that Dad would essentially be gone from March through June each year. Spring is considered high season in the student travel industry. If you’ve ever been to Washington D.C. in May, you know exactly what I mean! Popular student destinations are teeming with pubescent travelers, and lines and wait times are long. Maybe it’s time to consider the many advantages of off-season travel.

What is off-season travel?

Speaking in student travel terms, off-season is typically considered the fall term of the school year. Most teachers aren’t yet thinking about a trip. They’re probably focused on fundraising and figuring out where to go!  Get a jump start on everyone by getting your group out the door in October or November.  You’ll still have time to fundraise and you may get better participation.

Price

There are lots of excellent advantages to traveling off-season, not the least of which is price. You can score some great deals on accommodations, transportation, attractions and dining simply by traveling with your group during off-peak times.  Many attractions are anxious to capitalize on fall business and sometimes offer deep discounts for your student group.

Crowds

Smaller crowds, shorter lines, better seats and less stress- fall is a great time to hit the road!  Students are notoriously short on patience when it comes to standing in lines.  Eliminate the hassle of fighting the crowds and travel when you all have room to breathe!

Prime Picks

Traveling off-season most likely means better hotels and motor coaches. If you’re not competing with countless other school groups, you can choose what works best for you.  Hotels may have more availability and coach companies a better selection of coaches.

Unique Experiences

There are amazing opportunities that exist ONLY when you travel off-season, particularly closer to the holidays. If you’re heading to NYC, check out the Christmas Spectacular starring the Radio City Rockettes. Washington D.C. hosts nightly events with the National Christmas Tree as the backdrop. Disney’s Candlelight Processional and Massed Choir Program is a spectacular performance opportunity only available in November and December.

Weather

Don’t discount the weather!  The fall weather is spectacular in many student destinations.  Cool and crisp in the northeast, not too hot in the south, and snow is (hopefully!) not a factor yet.  Take advantage of the changing seasons and change your travel to off-season.
